Hierarchy of Controls

Controls are proactive measures to eliminate hazards or reduce their impact.

The Hierarchy of Controls provides a structured approach to managing workplace hazards. It prioritises the most effective methods, such as eliminating risks, and progresses to measures like protective equipment to ensure a safer, more efficient work environment.

To Elliminate hazards always start at the top and work you way down

Elimination

Physically removing the hazard is the most effective control measure, as it completely eliminates the risk.

Substitution

Replacing a hazardous material, process, or equipment with a safer alternative reduces the level of risk involved.

Engineering Controls

Designing or modifying equipment, facilities, or processes to isolate people from the hazard reduces exposure.

Administrative Controls

Implementing policies, training, schedules, or procedures to change how people work and minimise risk.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Providing equipment like helmets, gloves, or masks to protect workers is the least effective measure but still necessary as a last line of defense.

PPE should always be the last line of defence
